Language Training and Newcomer Services

At St. Stephen's Community House, providing services to refugees and immigrants has been at the heart of our programs for 40 years. St. Stephen's helps newcomers settle in Canada with English language classes, information and referral services, support groups and employment preparation.

Services include:

  • 11 Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) classes (includes free child care, transportation assistance and computer assisted learning)
  • Seven English As A Second Language (ESL) classes (all levels)
  • One-on-one settlement assistance in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Spanish
  • Newcomer support groups
  • Monthly newcomer orientation and information sessions
  • Employment exploration and preparation workshops
  • Cantonese-speaking Group and English Conversation Circle
  • Family-oriented cultural and recreational events (e.g. summer outings and cultural celebrations)
  • Community services (e.g. income tax clinics)
  • Access to employment, health and education resources
