Ryerson Public School was opened in 1877. By 1914 the school was teaching manual training and domestic skills, new courses then, and offered a commercial course to teach office skills. The principal, William Groves, was quoted as saying the children came from poor and working-class families and needed training that would help them to earn a living as soon as possible, as few of them would go on to high school.
